Car Spares

Car Spares
By Richard A. Jones

The high cost of car repairs can often be viewed as a necessary evil. The more urgent the repair, in most cases, the higher the cost. The ideal situation is to find an acceptable balance between cost and speed of repair.

With most new vehicles now having at least a three-year warranty the repair costs are not an issue as long as you have kept to the manufacturer's maintenance schedule. The only problems to consider here are how long before your vehicle can be booked in for repair and will a courtesy vehicle be provided for the time your vehicle is off the road. From my own experience as a self employed person who needs a vehicle constantly, I have found it more cost effective to pay for a minor repair myself to keep my vehicle on the road and keep me earning.

For those of us that have a vehicle not covered by a warranty the most cost effective way would be to go down the day route in our spare time. The first thing to do is find a good reliable mobile mechanic. Make sure the mechanic is a sole trader and not part of a larger company. Ask friends and neighbors for recommendations, as this is the best way to find reliable tradesmen. At first give the mechanic a small job such as fit new brake pads to strike up a business relationship. Then talk to him about car repairs and services in general and suggest that in the future you may need certain jobs done and you will become one of his regular clients.

I have found this to be the most cost effective way of getting car repairs done as this leaves you free to source the parts yourself and take advantage of the low prices available for new or used parts online, also the mechanic's low overheads mean his labor charges will be reasonable.
